The Importance of Employee Appreciation

Employee appreciation is essential to any business. Employees want to feel appreciated for the hard work that they put in day after day. Feeling appreciated not only feels good, it motivates individuals to keep working hard and achieving goals. Far too often, managers are focused on the long game. They think about reaching goals but not how employees can be motivated to get there. They neglect employee appreciation, and in turn, they fail to achieve the results they hope to see. Employees perform the hard work of the business; by failing to appreciate them, they may not work as hard.

Encourage Happiness and Trust

Appreciated employees create appreciated leaders. Frequently, when people quit their jobs, it is not because they didn’t like their job, but because they didn’t like their supervisor. A supervisor that shows frequent appreciation is a leader that is more likely to be trusted. When you recognize your employees, you’re investing in their happiness.

Improve Retention

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that great employees quit jobs primarily because they don’t feel respected, equal, or as if they have a place in the company’s future. Showing appreciation goes a long way when it comes to employee retention.

Showing Appreciation

How can you show your employees you appreciate them? There are a few different methods, but first thing’s first: make sure you have this important date in your mind: March 4 (Employee Appreciation Day).

Start an Employee Appreciation Reward System

A great way to show appreciation is by starting a fun reward system. After finishing a task or reaching certain goals, employees gain points. Once gaining enough points, employees should earn rewards, like extra vacation time, a work-from-home day, or gift cards. This incentivizes employees to complete their work, but it also shows appreciation.

Bring in Food

There is a reason they say the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach. Bringing in pizza or donuts now and again not only brings the whole team together and has the potential to help strengthen relationships, but it makes employees feel appreciated.

Utilize Social Media

Social media is a great outlet to show employees you appreciate them. Posting about employees and their accomplishments on social media goes that extra step to make sure you not only show your appreciation, but encourage others to show theirs too.
